Adult Chinese Classes in London

SOAS Teacher Charlie Cheuk

For Adults, there are two that we’ve reviewed.

SOAS, at 10 Thornhaugh St, London, WC1H 0XG, is for adults only, with a stronger emphasis on academic learning. Typical courses are one-year of three terms of twelve weeks.  Each lesson lasts around 2 hours, and the fees per term are around £300.  If you can, try to get classes with Mr Charles Cheuk – his informal and friendly style is ideal for adult learners.

The beginners Cantonese class concentrates solely on spoken cantonese – no writing is required, although some basic character recognition is taught. During our review we found a mix of both English-born Chinese and non-Chinese students. Some students were learning for fun, others for business reasons.

Cantonese classes at the Mary Ward Centre, have now ended. It is not known if they will be offering in future.
